چکیده

We study long-wave Marangoni convection in a layer heated from below. Using the scaling k=O(square root(Bi)), where k is the wave number and Bi is the Biot number, we derive a set of amplitude equations. Analysis of this set shows presence of monotonic and oscillatory modes of instability. Oscillatory mode has not been previously found for such direction of heating. Studies of weakly nonlinear dynamics demonstrate that stable steady and oscillatory patterns can be found near the stability threshold.

Long-wave Marangoni convection in a thin film heated from below.

We consider long-wave Marangoni convection in a liquid layer atop a substrate of low thermal conductivity, heated from below. We demonstrate that the critical perturbations are materialized at the wave number K ∼ √Bi, where Bi is the Biot number which characterizes the weak heat flux from the free surface. In addition to the conventional monotonic mode, a novel oscillatory mode is found. Applyi...

Steady and Oscillatory Side-Band Instabilities in Marangoni Convection with Deformable Interface

The stability of Marangoni roll convection in a liquid-gas system with deformable interface is studied in the case when there is a nonlinear interaction between two modes of Marangoni instability: long-scale surface deformations and short-scale convection. Within the framework of a model derived in [1], it is shown that the nonlinear interaction between the two modes substantially changes the w...

Instabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane

Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...

Thermal Convection of Rotating Micropolar Fluid in Hydromagnetics Saturating A Porous Medium

This paper deals with the theoretical investigation of the thermal instability of a thin layer of electrically conducting micropolar rotating fluid, heated from below in the presence of uniform vertical magnetic field in porous medium. A dispersion relation is obtained for a flat fluid layer, contained between two free boundaries using a linear stability analysis theory, and normal mode analysi...

Oscillatory long-wave Marangoni convection in a layer of a binary liquid: hexagonal patterns.

We consider a long-wave oscillatory Marangoni convection in a layer of a binary liquid in the presence of the Soret effect. A weakly nonlinear analysis is carried out on a hexagonal lattice. It is shown that the derived set of cubic amplitude equations is degenerate. A three-parameter family of asynchronous hexagons (AH), representing a superposition of three standing waves with the amplitudes ...
